Why Steel Magnolias Ends With a Dedication to Susan
“For Susan, from Bob” is the dedication recorded at the end of Steel Magnolias in AFI’s film catalogue. Susan was playwright and screenwriter Robert Harling’s sister, Susan Harling Robinson. She inspired Shelby, the character at the centre of the story’s family connection. AFI Movie Club selected the 1989 film on November 6, bringing that origin back into view alongside its famous cast.

The names on the billing need little introduction: Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, Julia Roberts and Shirley MacLaine. But Harling’s material existed before this screen ensemble. The catalogue’s account, based on contemporary reporting, traces it to a short-story tribute to his sister.
From a family tribute to four Saturdays
The writing became an off-Broadway play, which opened in March 1987. Harling then wrote the screenplay for Herbert Ross’s film. The same writer carried the story between the two forms; this was not simply a film borrowing a recognisable stage title.
AFI describes the play’s setting with unusual precision: a beauty parlour on four Saturday mornings over roughly two and a half years. That span is easy to miss when concentrating on the salon as a single location. The room remains a point of return while time passes for the people who gather there.
It is a practical piece of context for an ensemble adaptation. A shared workplace can bring characters into conversation without a separate event being arranged for every meeting. That observation follows from the stage setting; it does not require claiming that every scene in the film duplicates the play.
A film with a date, a director and a cast
Ross directed the 1989 release, which AFI lists as a 119-minute, PG-rated comedy-drama. Its catalogue gives November 15, 1989 as the release date. Harling’s dedication survived the move to the screen, connecting the finished production to the family tribute from which the writing began.
MacLaine provides a further connection to the institute making today’s selection. AFI honoured her with its Life Achievement Award in 2012. That honour is part of the career history mentioned in the Movie Club post, rather than a new prize being announced for this selection.
The November 6 invitation
Today’s item is a retrospective recommendation of the Ross film. AFI links readers to a viewing-availability service, so the next step is to check a listing in the appropriate country, including whether it is a rental, purchase or subscription option. The post does not announce a new worldwide streaming agreement.
Our look at cinema and streaming considers the wider changes in film distribution. This recommendation is more particular: the 1989 Steel Magnolias, its six prominent performers and the writer whose sister is remembered in its final dedication. The cast attracts attention; the catalogue supplies the reason Susan’s name belongs in the story.
