Storyline

Dr Robert Laing moves into an apartment in a tower that promises a complete modern way of life. Inside, the residents have their own parties, ambitions and pecking order. A floor number is also a social position. Laing is drawn into this arrangement, whose centre of attention is Royal, the architect living above the world he designed. Then the building starts to fail. Power cuts and defects are felt especially on the lower floors, and the divisions between neighbours become harder to contain. The society that looked so carefully organised turns violent. Tom Hiddleston plays Laing and Jeremy Irons plays Royal in Ben Wheatley's adaptation of J.G. Ballard's novel. Set in the 1970s, the film imagines social collapse within one address, with residents continuing to inhabit the structure that is coming apart around them.

Amy Jump wrote the screen adaptation, and Wheatley directed it. They kept the novel's mid-1970s setting rather than relocating its imagined future to the period in which the film was made. That choice gives the architecture, interiors and parties a shared historical setting.

Clint Mansell composed the music and Mark Tildesley was responsible for the production design. The BFI identifies both contributions in its account of the film. Hiddleston, Irons, Sienna Miller and Luke Evans lead the cast; the film is recorded as a 2015 production in IMDb's title listing.
