Drifters Yify

Storyline

The work of catching herring fills John Grierson's Drifters. Boats, crews and machinery share the frame with the sea that sustains the trade. On deck, the fishermen haul in their catch; below the surface, the camera finds another part of the same world. The human effort and the movement of fish are brought together through editing rather than a narrator's explanation. This is a silent documentary about Britain's North Sea fishery, made in 1929. There is no fictional hero to follow and no star playing a fisherman. Its people are the workers themselves. The interest lies in what their labour involves: the scale of a catch, the strain on equipment and the coordination needed aboard a working vessel. Grierson gives that ordinary industry the attention a feature might give an adventure.

Trivia

Music attached to Drifters can come from a much later period than its images. The BFI commissioned sound artist Jason Singh to create an accompaniment in 2012. He subsequently performed live with the film on the Following the Fleet tours, including visits to former herring ports in 2016 and 2017.

Singh's accompaniment draws on his own voice and live improvisation, as he explained in a 2017 Sight and Sound interview. That history concerns a particular modern score, not a soundtrack recorded with the fishermen in 1929.
