Storyline

Harry is learning engineering; his sister Sally works in a cotton mill. Neither has much room for error in 1930s Salford. The Hardcastle family’s plans depend on work, and the Depression makes that work uncertain. Sally’s story takes a harder turn when helping her unemployed family means accepting the attentions of a rich bookmaker. Love and money no longer sit in separate compartments. The film stays with a community trying to get by, where neighbours have plenty to say about other people’s choices but few answers to the shortage of money.

The story was considered too difficult for the screen in 1936. In its survey of British social realism, the BFI records the censors’ rejection of a proposed adaptation of Walter Greenwood’s novel. John Baxter’s version reached cinemas in June 1941, five years later and during a war. Its setting remained the Depression-era Salford of the 1930s. Baxter was producer as well as director. The BFI’s film record names Deborah Kerr, Clifford Evans and George Carney among the cast and gives the running time as 99 minutes.
