Storyline:   "The Ruins" (2008) is a horror thriller film directed by Carter Smith, based on the novel of the same name by Scott Smith. The story follows a group of young tourists whose vacation in Mexico takes a horrifying turn when they decide to visit ancient Mayan ruins. The film begins with a group of friends Jeff, Amy, Stacy, and Eric on vacation in Mexico. They meet Mathias, a German tourist, who convinces them to join him on an expedition to an off-the-beaten-path archaeological site. Intrigued by the adventure, the group sets off to explore the ancient Mayan ruins. As they arrive at the site, they quickly realize that they are not alone. The locals warn them to stay away, but curiosity gets the better of them. Upon reaching the top of the ruins, they discover a centuries-old archaeological mystery that soon becomes a nightmarish reality.

The group becomes trapped on top of the ruins, surrounded by a malevolent force that seems to be alive and intent on keeping them there. With no means of communication and their supplies running low, tensions rise among the group.   1. Despite the film's setting in Mexico during the summer, the majority of the scenes were shot in Australia during the winter. Actors were provided heavy coats between takes, and their bodies were sprayed with water and olive oil to replicate sweat.
