Storyline

"The Ruins" (2008) is a horror thriller film directed by Carter Smith, based on the novel of the same name by Scott Smith. The story follows a group of young tourists whose vacation in Mexico takes a horrifying turn when they decide to visit ancient Mayan ruins. The film begins with a group of friends Jeff, Amy, Stacy, and Eric on vacation in Mexico. They meet Mathias, a German tourist, who convinces them to join him on an expedition to an off-the-beaten-path archaeological site. Intrigued by the adventure, the group sets off to explore the ancient Mayan ruins. As they arrive at the site, they quickly realize that they are not alone. The locals warn them to stay away, but curiosity gets the better of them. Upon reaching the top of the ruins, they discover a centuries-old archaeological mystery that soon becomes a nightmarish reality. The group becomes trapped on top of the ruins, surrounded by a malevolent force that seems to be alive and intent on keeping them there. With no means of communication and their supplies running low, tensions rise among the group. As they attempt to escape, they are faced with the horrifying realization that the ruins themselves are a living entity, and it will stop at nothing to preserve its secrets. Despite the film's setting in Mexico during the summer, the majority of the scenes were shot in Australia during the winter. Actors were provided heavy coats between takes, and their bodies were sprayed with water and olive oil to replicate sweat. Director Carter Smith suggested transforming a hill covered in vines from the novel into an ancient Mayan temple, a change agreed upon by writer Scott B. Smith. The rights to adapt the novel into a film were secured before the book's official publication. Director Carter Smith received the offer to helm the film adaptation while reading the Scott B. Smith novel, which he had recently purchased. All outdoor scenes in the film were captured using natural light. Director Carter Smith successfully convinced screenwriter Scott B. Smith to reintegrate the Greek characters into the screenplay, despite their initial exclusion. Before filming, actress Laura Ramsey consulted with nurses who had treated individuals in psychiatric wards to capture authentic mannerisms related to the characters' experiences. The Mayan temple featured in the film comprised three distinct sets, including a facade covered in vines, the top of the temple where the main events unfolded, and a set for underground shaft and tunnel scenes. Distant shots of the entire temple were a combination of practical sets and CGI. Ben Stiller's involvement in the film was due to his friendship with novelist/screenwriter Scott B. Smith. The character portrayed by Shawn Ashmore wears a T-shirt with a deliberate bull's-eye symbol, as mentioned by Director Carter Smith in the DVD commentary.
