Trivia

Almost 70 dogs were involved in the creation of this film, with many rescued from shelters. Some crew members adopted several dogs after filming concluded. The actors faced challenges shooting the film due to constant instructions from dog trainers just outside the frame, involving jumping, whistling, and shouting. The dogs underwent various training durations, with most trained for two to three months, while the main dogs' training extended to nearly sixteen weeks, approximately four months. The movie is based on a novel first published in 1971. The film features a diverse range of dog breeds, including a Bullmastiff, Boston Terrier, English Bulldog, Border Collie, Chinese Crested Dog, Poodle, and Beauceron. Emma Roberts had a mishap during the shelter escape scene but emerged unharmed, covered in paw prints from the dogs. Teaching the dogs to use the feeding machine was time-consuming, requiring the first dog to learn not to dive onto the passing bowls of food. Special effects coordinator Michael Lantieri faced challenges in creating the ball-throwing machine, dealing with various settings such as ball weight and synchronization. This Nickelodeon film broke the tradition of being co-produced with Paramount Pictures, instead partnering with DreamWorks. Emma Roberts co-starred with Lisa Kudrow in this movie, marking one of three occasions she worked with a female lead from the TV series Friends.
