Storyline

Bill Jones and Nina Petrovka are already on the road in Arizona when The Red Menace begins. Their journey leads back to California, where Bill’s plans for civilian life went wrong. A bogus property deal took his savings; the officials he approached offered no help. Jack Tyler noticed his anger and introduced him to people who seemed willing to listen. That welcome drew Bill towards the Communist Party and towards Nina, who teaches Marxism. Their romance develops inside an organisation that will not tolerate dissent. Once they want out, the people who recruited them become the threat they must escape.

Fathoms Deep was the title used while the picture was being made. AFI cites a May 1949 newspaper report saying Republic chose it to keep the subject quiet. Even the credits have a peculiarity: Lloyd G. Davies is listed once as Inspector O’Toole and again as himself, the narrator. AFI records Herbert J. Yates as executive producer but finds no on-screen producer credit. The company was Republic Pictures; R. G. Springsteen directed. Robert Rockwell plays Bill and Hanne Axman plays Nina, the two characters whose flight frames the story.
