About: In the film, Julie Delpy and Tracy Letts portray Dina and Danny, a rigid, dissatisfied couple whose young son Remi (played by Keaton Nigel Cooke) is recovering from cancer. This theme is reflected in a later story. Remi is given the dachshund as a gift to lift his spirits. In a subsequent story, Dawn (played by Greta Gerwig), a veterinary assistant, believes that the dachshund could be the key to melting the heart of Brandon (played by Kieran Culkin), whom she knew from grade school as a notorious bully.

- At the January 2016 Sundance premiere, some audience members responded angrily to the film, and in response, a few festival reviewers deliberately revealed key plot points in order to discourage animal lovers from seeing it.
- Heather Matarazzo declined the opportunity to reprise her role as Dawn Wiener from "Welcome to the Dollhouse" (1995), and was replaced by Greta Gerwig.
- Brie Larson filmed a scene for the film, but it was ultimately removed from the final cut.
- In preparation for a scene in the film, Keaton Nigel Cooke learned to play "Clair de Lune" on flute in less than a week.
- The title character in the film was portrayed by four dachshund show dogs, but according to the director Todd Solondz, he found them to be "dumb."
- The film Wiener-Dog won the Best Film Award at the 2017 LongTake Interactive Film Festival (LIFF2017) held in Milan, Italy between July 7-9. The films in the competition were selected from titles that had not yet been released in Italian movie theaters, and the winner was chosen by the people attending the screenings.
- Keaton Nigel Cooke was the only lead actor with two movies in the Sundance Film Festival of 2016.
