Storyline: More than ten years have passed since the first movie, and the sequel begins with Jake Sully describing his peaceful life as the leader of the Omaticaya Clan, where he lives with his wife Neytiri and their children. Along with their biological children, Neteyam, Lo'ak, and Tuk, they have also adopted a human boy named Spider, who was born on Pandora. Neytiri is wary of Spider because of his human origins, but the children get along well, and Spider is more drawn to Na'vi culture than his human roots. However, their peaceful life is disrupted when a spaceship from the RDA arrives on Pandora, bringing humans who plan to colonize the planet once again. Among the newcomers is Colonel Quaritch, who has been cloned into a Na'vi body with his memories from before his death uploaded. Although Quaritch cannot recall his demise, he is still determined to take revenge on Jake and carry out his mission to eliminate him. This creates new challenges for Jake and his family, as they must protect their way of life from the RDA's destructive plans and Quaritch's vengeful mission.

- James Cameron explained that the Avatar sequels were such a massive undertaking that he divided the four scripts between Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno. He said, "I think we met for seven months and we whiteboarded out every scene in every film together, and I didn't assign each writer which film they were going to work on until the last day. I knew if I assigned them their scripts ahead of time, they'd tune out every time we were talking about the other movie."
