Trivia

Although a sequel was never made, "Pray for Death" did spawn a spiritual successor in the form of "Black Eagle" (1988), another martial arts film starring Sho Kosugi. Sho Kosugi, who played the lead character of Akira Saito, was a popular martial arts actor in the 80s, and "Pray for Death" was one of his most successful films. The film's director, Gordon Hessler, was known for his work in horror films such as "Scream and Scream Again" (1970) and "The Oblong Box" (1969). "Pray for Death" was shot on location in Atlanta, Georgia, and features several landmarks from the city. In addition to the Van Atta necklace, the film also features a number of other Easter eggs, such as the character of Charles Duncan (played by James Booth) being named after the film's production designer, Charles William Breen. The film's soundtrack was composed by prolific composer James Horner, who also worked on such iconic films as "Titanic" (1997) and "Avatar" (2009). Despite being a box office success, "Pray for Death" received mixed reviews from critics, with many criticizing its plot and acting. In Japan, the film was released under the title "Kuroneko - Yami no Tobari" ("Black Cat - Gateway to Darkness"), which is a reference to a scene in the film where a black cat is seen crossing the street.
