Storyline: Mary is a senior at American Eagle Christian High School in a suburban area of Baltimore. Although she considers herself born again, her spiritual rebirth occurred when she was just three years old. She is close friends with two classmates who are also members of her Christian band, the Christian Jewels. Hilary Faye is the leader of the group and presents herself as the perfect Christian, particularly in her strong connection to God. Veronica is an ethnic Vietnamese who was adopted by a black Christian couple, and saved by them. The fourth member is Tia, who is somewhat of an outsider due to her geeky status, but she aspires to be part of this Christian clique. They also have to interact with Hilary Faye's older brother, Roland, who is in a wheelchair since he was 9 years old, as he fell from a tree, Hilary Faye must transport him everywhere, including school, as a family obligation but they generally don't like each other.

- The producers initially tried to obtain the rights to use a piece of the title song from the musical Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) through traditional channels, but all their requests were denied. Eventually, a friend gave them Tim Rice's personal phone number, and after watching and loving the movie, Rice agreed to grant them the rights to use the song.
- The Hebrew writing on Cassandra's necklace (visible during the Christmas food court scene) reads "Cassandra."
- The prom songs performed by the Christian rock band Godflight in the movie were actually by The Replacements, a rock band from the 1980s.
- According to director Brian Dannelly, before production, several groups working on the film quit due to objections over the film's unflattering content. These groups included a church, a Christian rock band, and the homeowner whose house was supposed to be used for important scenes.
- The woman who coached Mandy Moore and Eva Amurri on speaking in tongues gave them several phrases that they could repeat, including "she bought a Hyundai" and "untie my bow tie."
- The role of Hilary Faye was originally given to Anne Hathaway, but funding fell through, and Hathaway had to start filming for Ella Enchanted (2004). This led to Hathaway being replaced by Mandy Moore, her The Princess Diaries (2001) co-star. However, Hathaway later secured the lead role in Havoc (2005), beating out Moore for the part.
