- The film is dedicated to Roman Polanski's late wife, Sharon Tate, who was killed by the Manson Clan in 1969. Tate had read the source novel by Thomas Hardy and believed her husband would make a great film based on it.
- Nastassja Kinski was only 17 years old when she appeared in the film.
- This was Roman Polanski's final film for around seven years until he directed "Pirates" in 1986.
- Although the film is set in Dorset, England, it was actually filmed in France because of Polanski's legal troubles in the United States.
- There were rumors that Polanski and Kinski were in a romantic relationship before filming, but Kinski denied this in interviews.
- Kinski stated in a 2001 interview that Polanski gave her dignity by casting her in the film, allowing her to act without having to take her clothes off after being subjected to sexual advances by producers and directors since the age of 12.
