Borderlands Trivia
- Eli Roth shot the film during the summer of 2021 and completed it by early 2022. However, the project wasn't ready, causing delays of more than two years in post-production. In early 2023, Tim Miller was brought in to oversee two weeks of reshoots, which required a new musical score by Steve Jablonsky as the original one by Nathan Barr no longer matched the film's revised tone.
- Liliths primary firearm, called "Vladof Infinity," is referenced by Marcus in the movie. This weapon is inspired by a legendary gun in the video game, which has infinite ammunition. This explains why Lilith never runs out of bullets or reloads her weapon during combat scenes, aligning with the games mechanics.
- Originally, Eli Roth had aimed for an R rating for the film. However, in interviews, he shared that his first version of the movie was less violent than expected. After Tim Miller's involvement and the reshoots, the movie shifted to a PG-13 rating, making it Roth's second film with a lower rating after "The House with a Clock in Its Walls" (2018), which also earned a PG rating.
- When the movie was released, it achieved an extraordinary feat by debuting with a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Such a low rating is exceedingly rare and is a strong indication of critical consensus. This makes the film stand out in discussions about critically panned movies.
- Tim Miller stepped in to direct two weeks of reshoots for the film since Eli Roth was already committed to working on another project, "Thanksgiving" (2023). Interestingly, that film also stars Gina Gershon. These reshoots were a necessary part of completing the post-production phase and ensuring that the movie was ready for release.
- Cate Blanchett shared in interviews that she received a significant paycheck for her role in the film. However, what truly drew her to the project was the fun of using guns and getting fully immersed in that action-packed world. She humorously mentioned how working on the film provided an outlet for her, as she had become overly attached to using a chainsaw during the Covid pandemic lockdowns.
- When released, the film grossed $8.6 million domestically during its opening weekend. This marked a low point for video game adaptations, as it was the weakest opening weekend since "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City" (2021), which only managed to earn $5.3 million.
- In 2015, Leigh Whannell was initially selected to direct the movie. However, Eli Roth eventually replaced him despite Roth having no experience managing a budget as large as $100 million. Roth began filming in 2021, but the production faced multiple challenges, leading to a delayed release until 2024.
- Before working on "The Last of Us" (2023), Craig Mazin was attached to write the screenplay for this film. His version was envisioned to stay truer to the video game's narrative. After his departure from the project, other writers took over to steer the screenplay in a different direction, eventually leading to the final version seen on screen.
- Jamie Lee Curtis discussed how she portrayed her character as being on the autism spectrum. This interpretation aligns with the game's version of the character, Tannis, who frequently mentions her difficulties in connecting with others. Curtiss portrayal adds another layer of depth to the character in the film, making it a faithful adaptation from the game.
