Storyline

"Figures In A Landscape" is a 1970 psychological thriller directed by Joseph Losey and based on the novel of the same name by Barry England. The movie follows two prisoners, MacConnachie (played by Malcolm McDowell) and Ansell (played by Robert Shaw), who escape from custody and go on the run. As they flee across a stark, rugged landscape, they must contend with a relentless pursuit by a helicopter and ground forces, led by a sadistic officer (played by Christopher Malcolm). As they traverse the countryside, MacConnachie and Ansell struggle to survive and maintain their sanity in the face of the brutal and relentless pursuit. Along the way, they encounter various characters, some of whom offer assistance while others are hostile. As the pursuit intensifies, the two men must rely on their wits and each other to stay one step ahead of their pursuers. The movie builds to a tense and dramatic climax as the men face a final showdown with their hunters. "Figures In A Landscape" is a gripping and intense movie that explores themes of survival, friendship, and the brutality of authoritarian power. With strong performances from its lead actors, breathtaking cinematography, and a haunting musical score, the film is a classic example of the psychological thriller genre.

Trivia

The production of the film underwent many changes including shifts in the cast and director, and a number of different writers. Robert Shaw, who was also a novelist, eventually agreed to do a final rewrite before filming began, but ended up making changes throughout the entire production process. The movie was not successful at the box office and was heavily edited for showings in Britain. Joseph Losey was brought in to replace Peter Medak as the film's director. Robert Shaw replaced Peter O'Toole as one of the actors in the film. Malcolm McDowell claimed that Robert Shaw had a competitive streak and would challenge him to running races during filming. Despite finding it challenging to work with Robert Shaw due to his drinking, Malcolm McDowell expressed his fondness for him. Richard Vanstone was interviewed for a role in the movie. Robert Shaw received a screenplay credit for his work on the film, which was a rare occurrence for him. The story of the film centers around a mysterious helicopter that follows two strangers throughout the story. The ending of Joseph Losey's previous film, The Damned (1962), also featured a helicopter following two people.
