- Although Sidney Poitier and Anne Bancroft were top-billed in the film, they never appeared on-screen together in a single scene. Bancroft repeated this achievement in another film, 84 Charing Cross Road (1987), in which she and Sir Anthony Hopkins co-starred but did not share any scenes.
- The film depicts the cumbersome process of tracing a telephone call in 1965 using state-of-the-art equipment, including number 5 cross bar and step-by-step electro/mechanical equipment, which was filmed in the central offices of the old Northwest Bell Telephone company. Modern telephone switching equipment can trace a call in less than a minute or even 30 seconds.
- "The Slender Thread" was Sydney Pollack's feature film directorial debut. Before that, he had worked for years in television.
