Top Gun: Maverick Trivia
- Miles Teller reported that three out of the six new actors vomited every day of filming while in the jets.
- Tom Cruise insisted on using minimal green screen and CGI aerial shots in the film, and even the close-up cockpit shots were taken during actual in-flight sequences. This required the cast to undergo extensive G-force training to withstand the physical demands of the flights.
- Miles Teller also said that the cast members were allowed to choose their own call signs. He chose "Rooster" because it was in the same family as "Goose."
- The roof of the shack next to Ed Harris's character was not supposed to lift when Maverick flies past, but they only had one chance to film it, so it was a fortunate accident. (The Darkstar plane used in the scene was actually a non-flying mockup, and the actual plane was digitally removed and replaced with an image of the Darkstar.)
- The film is dedicated to the memory of Tony Scott, the director of the original Top Gun (1986), who died by suicide on August 19, 2012 at the age of 68. Scott had been working on his own version of a sequel before his death.
- The actors playing pilots had to not only film themselves, turning the camera on and off, but they also had to touch up their own makeup, adjust their lighting, and handle their own sound. The director sometimes had to wait on the ground for hours for the actors to return with the footage, and adjustments would be made after viewing it. The actors would then have to go back up for another take.
- After undergoing flight training and preparation on the ground, the actors joined professional pilots for 90-minute flights a few times per day. They had to hit their marks, check their lighting and makeup, remember their eyelines, and turn on the cameras themselves while in the air. Cinematographer Claudio Miranda had to study flight paths and weather patterns in order to set the camera exposures before takeoff, as there was no live film feed to track on the ground. This made for some tense waiting periods for Miranda, as it was difficult to predict how the lighting and exposures would turn out.
