Trivia

Director Renny Harlin, being Finnish himself, incorporates several Finnish elements and references in the film "Cleaner": The Finnish coat of arms and flag can be seen on the mirror behind Tom (Samuel L. Jackson) during a conversation with Eddie (Ed Harris) in a hotel room, showcasing the director's pride in his Finnish heritage. In a scene where Tom reveals a book of bribed officers to Eddie, the word "Helsinki," the capital of Finland, is spray-painted on a concrete pillar, further emphasizing the Finnish connection. Principal photography for the film was completed one day ahead of schedule, coinciding with Renny Harlin's 48th birthday. Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Forster, who both appeared in "Cleaner," previously worked together in "Jackie Brown" (1997). The majority of the film was shot in Shreveport, Louisiana, standing in for the fictional location of Trenton, New Jersey. The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina was still evident in parts of the city during filming. Keke Palmer, who played a role in the film, released her debut album "So Uncool" shortly after the premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Samuel L. Jackson personally requested Renny Harlin to direct the film, as both felt it would provide a refreshing departure from their previous collaborations in "The Long Kiss Goodnight" (1996) and "Deep Blue Sea" (1999). Samuel L. Jackson and Eva Mendes, who also appeared in "Cleaner," worked together in "The Spirit" (2008). While "Cleaner" premiered as a Gala presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2007, it went direct-to-DVD in the United States. However, it did receive theatrical releases in various international markets, including Finland. Director Renny Harlin formed a friendship with producer Michael P. Flannigan during their work on the Finnish biopic "Mannerheim" and later collaborated on "5 Days of War" (2011), with Flannigan serving as an executive producer. Finnish actor Irina Björklund was offered a role in "Cleaner" but declined due to prior musical commitments. Her husband, Peter Franzén, went on to appear in the film after turning down a role in "Exorcist: The Beginning" (2004).
