About:  "Wake in Fright" is a 1971 Australian psychological thriller film directed by Ted Kotcheff. Based on the novel of the same name by Kenneth Cook, the movie explores the descent into madness of a young schoolteacher named John Grant (played by Gary Bond). The film begins as Grant, on his way to Sydney for the summer holidays, stops in the small outback town of Bundanyabba (known as "The Yabba"). However, his plans take an unexpected turn when he gets entangled in the town's gambling and drinking culture. With no means of escape, Grant finds himself trapped in a nightmarish world fueled by excessive alcohol consumption, brutal behavior, and a relentless sense of isolation. As Grant's mental state deteriorates, he becomes increasingly entangled with the town's inhabitants, including the enigmatic and dangerous figure of Doc Tydon (played by Donald Pleasence). The film delves into Grant's descent into a state of moral decay and his struggle to maintain his sanity and identity amidst the oppressive environment of The Yabba.

"Wake in Fright" serves as a powerful examination of the destructive nature of peer pressure, conformity, and the loss of personal agency. It shines a harsh light on the dark underbelly of Australian outback culture and explores themes of masculinity, identity crisis, and the impact of environment on human behavior. The film's raw and visceral portrayal of the harsh outback landscape, coupled with intense performances from the cast, creates an unsettling atmosphere that lingers throughout the narrative. It offers a haunting and disturbing depiction of a man's gradual unraveling and the moral choices he faces in an environment that challenges his very existence. "Wake in Fright" is a thought-provoking and unsettling film that remains highly regarded for its exploration of psychological torment and the fragility of the human psyche. It continues to be celebrated as a seminal work in Australian cinema, offering a unique and uncompromising portrayal of a man's struggle against his own inner demons in a hostile and unforgiving world.

Wake In Fright Trivia

  1. Director Ted Kotcheff recalled that Chips Rafferty, in his last film appearance, insisted on drinking real pints of beer during the bar sequences. Despite the substitution of non-alcoholic beers, Rafferty could immediately tell that they had no alcoholic content and demanded proper pints be served. It is estimated that Rafferty was consuming up to 30 pints per day during filming.
  2. During the "Two-Up" gambling sequence, realistic "artificial" banknotes were printed for the shoot. These banknotes looked so authentic that two extras were later arrested for attempting to pass them off as genuine currency.
  3. The film went out of circulation for many years due to the dissolution of the production companies involved. However, after an extensive search, the film's editor Anthony Buckley located the original film and sound elements in CBS' Iron Mountain archives in Pittsburgh. A full digital restoration was made possible after the recovery of the film cans, including some containing the original camera negative.
  4. The author of the novel, Kenneth Cook, based the fictional town of Bundanyabba on Broken Hill in New South Wales, where much of the movie was filmed. Broken Hill is one of the most isolated inland towns in Australia.
  5. Certain lines in the film, such as Charlie's comment about having snakes in one's pocket and Tim Hynes' quip about checking oil, were improvised by actors John Meillon and Al Thomas, respectively.
  6. The eerie silence and dimming of lights in the bar scene depict a ritual that still takes place in Returned & Services League (RSL) clubs across Australia. It is a moment of remembrance for fallen service personnel, accompanied by the recitation of the 'Ode of Remembrance' and a period of silence.
  7. John Grant's comments about moonlight, comparing it to "snow on the desert's dusty face," are taken from 'The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam', specifically Quatrain 14.
  8. The opera record played by Doc Tydon in his cabin is Amelita Galli-Curci singing "Caro Nome" from Verdi's "Rigoletto."
  9. The film features two beer brands, "West End Bitter" from South Australia and "Courage Bitter," an English brewer's attempt to enter the Australian market.
  10. United Artists had little faith in the film and gave it a limited release in a single theater on the east side of New York. Unfortunately, a blizzard occurred on the opening day, resulting in no audience members seeing the film.
