Storyline: The 2009 movie "The Stepfather" is a psychological thriller that follows the story of a man named David Harris who has a history of marrying into families with children and then murdering them to start a new life under a new identity. After his latest killing spree, he assumes the identity of a new man named "Jay" and begins to court and pursue a recently divorced woman named Susan Harding. Soon, David integrates himself into Susan's life and becomes a stepfather figure to her teenage daughter, Beth, and her younger son, Sean.
However, as David's behavior becomes increasingly strange and unsettling, Beth begins to investigate his past and uncovers his true identity and his deadly history. Now, Beth must convince her family and the authorities of David's true identity before it's too late and he strikes again. The tension builds up throughout the movie as Beth races against time to save her family from the clutches of the deceitful and dangerous David.

- The Stepfather (1987) was inspired by the story of John List, who murdered his family in 1971 and disappeared for 18 years before being recognized and reported by a neighbor who saw him on America's Most Wanted.
- Terry O'Quinn, who starred in the original film, was offered a cameo in the remake, but declined the offer.
- A scene from the trailer featuring a buzzsaw close to a character's face was cut from the final film due to pacing issues, but had already been used in several advertising materials.
- Braeden Lemasters, who played Penn Badgley's younger brother in the remake, also played his younger self in Easy A (2010).
- The original R-rated version of the film had a young step-daughter and a nude shower scene, while the PG-13 remake featured a young step-son with no nudity.
