Avengers: Age Of Ultron Trivia

  1. Scarlett Johansson was pregnant during filming, and to accommodate her pregnancy, many of her scenes were scheduled early on before she began to show. To conceal her pregnancy later in filming, three stunt doubles were hired. This created confusion among the other actors as the stunt women closely resembled Johansson. Chris Evans recounted instances where he would initiate a conversation with one of the stunt doubles, only realizing midway that it wasn't Johansson. This amusing situation highlighted the challenges faced in hiding Johansson's pregnancy while maintaining consistency in the film's action sequences. Some scenes also utilized CGI to digitally conceal Johansson's belly, ensuring continuity throughout the movie.
  2. James Spader, who portrayed Ultron, had to wear a unique contraption to establish eye level for the other actors during scenes. Since Ultron stood at a towering height of eight to nine feet, the five-foot-ten-inch Spader wore an antenna-like device made of a thick wire. Two red balls were attached to the top, representing the placement of Ultron's eyes. This provided a reference point for the cast members to direct their gaze correctly. However, this arrangement sometimes proved distracting for Elizabeth Olsen, who would instinctively look at Spader's intense performance rather than the balls representing Ultron's eyes. To help Olsen focus, Aaron Taylor-Johnson playfully reminded her by exclaiming, "Red balls! Look at his balls, Lizzie!" This light-hearted interaction showcased the camaraderie among the cast and their ability to maintain a playful atmosphere on set.
  3. Joss Whedon had James Spader in mind from the beginning and considered him the perfect choice for the role of Ultron. Whedon was particularly drawn to Spader's "hypnotic voice" that could be both eerily calm and compelling, while also retaining a human and humorous quality. This combination aligned with Whedon's vision for Ultron, a villain who possesses a complex range of emotions and traits. Spader's casting demonstrated Whedon's trust in his ability to bring the character to life in a captivating and multifaceted way.
  4. Aaron Taylor-Johnson was requested to lose weight and specifically reduce his muscle mass to portray Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver convincingly. As Quicksilver is often depicted as a runner with a lean physique, Taylor-Johnson needed to appear trimmer. This physical transformation was necessary to ensure the character's appearance aligned with his superhuman speed and agility.
  5. While Thanos was initially considered as a potential villain for "Avengers: Age of Ultron," Joss Whedon decided to feature Ultron as the main antagonist to maintain a grounded approach to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whedon emphasized the importance of the characters' connection to the real world, and he viewed Thanos as an overarching presence of villainy and darkness rather than the immediate next threat. As a result, Thanos was reserved for later appearances in "Avengers: Infinity War" (2018) and "Avengers: Endgame" (2019).
  6. On James Spader's first day on set, the cast was so impressed by his performance as Ultron that they applauded and cheered for him after his first take. This enthusiastic response from the cast highlights Spader's ability to embody the complex and compelling nature of the character, leaving a lasting impact on his fellow actors.
  7. It took Joss Whedon about a year to convince Aaron Taylor-Johnson to accept the role of Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver. Taylor-Johnson had concerns about the intense Marvel contracts, time commitments, and the ensemble cast involved. Even after accepting the role, he remained nervous. However, learning that his friend and "Godzilla" (2014) co-star Elizabeth Olsen would portray his sister in the film provided him comfort and familiarity, as the two would have a strong on-screen partnership throughout the movie.
  8. Initially, James Spader was intended to provide only the voice for Ultron. However, he expressed to the filmmakers that as a main character, he wanted to do more than just provide his voice. Consequently, Spader took on the additional role of performing Ultron through motion capture, allowing him to fully embody the character physically and emotionally.
  9. In the comics, Ultron's creator is Dr. Hank Pym, also known as Ant-Man. However, in "Avengers: Age of Ultron," the character's origin was modified, and Ultron became a dormant project developed by Tony Stark. This change allowed for a separation of Ultron's storyline from Hank Pym's, which was explored in the separate film "Ant-Man" (2015).
  10. Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson consulted with each other before accepting their respective roles as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver in "Avengers: Age of Ultron." Having formed a friendship while filming "Godzilla" (2014), they wanted to ensure that they would have the opportunity to work together again. Upon receiving their offers, they immediately reached out to one another to confirm their involvement, solidifying their on-screen sibling dynamic.
