Pickup On South Street Trivia

  1. Thelma Ritter received nominations for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for four consecutive years, with this film being the last in the series. The preceding nominations were for "All About Eve" (1950), "The Mating Season" (1951), and "With a Song in My Heart" (1952).
  2. Following a film preview, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover insisted on a meeting with studio head Darryl F. Zanuck and director/writer Samuel Fuller. Hoover objected to the perceived lack of patriotism in the character Skip, even when dealing with communists. Zanuck, supporting Fuller, declined to make any alterations, leading to the termination of the studio's close ties with the FBI. All agency references were removed from the film's promotional materials.
  3. Marilyn Monroe participated in a rehearsal and auditioned for the role of Candy after the director/writer Samuel Fuller invited her. Despite Fuller's appreciation for Monroe, he felt she was unsuitable for the part due to her "overwhelming sensuality," which did not align with the story.
  4. In the film's opening subway scene, a departing soldier is depicted wearing the "Big Red One" 1st Infantry Division shoulder patch. Samuel Fuller, the writer/director, served in the 1st Infantry Division during World War II and later created a film about it titled "The Big Red One" (1980).
  5. The film was shot in a remarkably brief period of 20 days.
  6. According to Samuel Fuller's autobiography, "A Third Face," Betty Grable expressed interest in the role of Candy and insisted on including a dance number in the film. Fuller declined, and Grable ultimately agreed to do the film without the dance sequence. However, Fuller had already started rehearsing with Jean Peters and chose to stick with her for the role.
  7. While working on the set of "Hell and High Water" (1954), Tyrone Power informed Samuel Fuller that this film had won the Bronze Lion at the Venice Film Festival, as reported in the Los Angeles Times.
  8. Darryl F. Zanuck introduced Samuel Fuller, then under contract with 20th Century Fox, to a script titled 'Blaze of Glory' by Dwight Taylor. The story revolves around a female lawyer falling in love with a criminal she defended in a murder trial. Fuller proposed a modification, suggesting a narrative centered on a lower-level criminal and his girlfriend. Initially titled 'Pickpocket,' Zanuck found the title too "European," leading to the adoption of the new title 'Pickup on South Street.' Fuller collaborated with Detective Dan Campion of the New York Police Department to infuse realism into the story.
  9. In an early scene where Candy lights a cigarette, the matchbook cover bears the inscription "Park Row," the title of Samuel Fuller's preceding film, "Park Row" (1952).
  10. The studio had to reshoot a scene where Candy and Joey frisk each other for loot, as the Production Code Office deemed their actions too risqué.
