Storyline:
"State of Grace" is a 1990 crime thriller set in the gritty underworld of New York City. The film follows Terry Noonan (Sean Penn), an Irish-American who returns to his old neighborhood in Hell's Kitchen after a decade away. Terry is reunited with his childhood friend Jackie Flannery (Gary Oldman), who is now a powerful member of the local Irish-American mob. Terry quickly becomes involved in Jackie's criminal activities and begins to work his way up the ranks of the gang.

State Of Grace Trivia
- The movie, State of Grace, features several incidents that are based on actual testimony given by captured mobsters. For instance, the meeting in the restaurant with the Italian mobster and the dead man's hand sequences are based on the recollections of various New York gangs.
- Sean Penn and Robin Wright, who played lovers in the movie, became a couple in real life during filming. They had two children over the next three years, broke up, then got back together before finally marrying in 1996. Sadly, they eventually divorced in 2010.
- In the scene where Frankie meets with Borelli, the restaurant they are in is the same restaurant that was used several times in the hit T.V. show, The Sopranos.
- Director Phil Joanou introduced Uma Thurman to actor Gary Oldman on the set, and she became Oldman's second wife shortly after the film premiered. Unfortunately, their marriage only lasted 18 months before Uma filed for divorce in March 1992.
- A number of scenes were cut from the film for pacing reasons as the original cut of the film was closer to 3 hours long. The most notable of these was an entire subplot featuring Frankie and Jackie killing Irish mob bosses together. This subplot was to enhance the relationship between Frankie and Jackie but didn't make it into the final film. The only footage that remains of these scenes can be seen in some Orion Home Video trailers.
- State of Grace features the word "fuck" and its variations 210 times in total, which averages out to approximately 1.6 times every minute.
- Originally titled Hells Kitchen, the movie was later changed to State of Grace.
- Ed Harris was not the original choice for his role in the film. Another actor was cast, but Harris eventually took the part. He had trouble accepting the role because he was still recovering from the injuries he suffered on the set of The Abyss (1989).
- Despite being an Irish-forward drama, Johnny Walker and Dewars, both Scottish liquor brands, are shown being drunk heavily in the movie.
- Bill Pullman was originally cast as Frankie Flannery, but he wasn't working out, and he was replaced by Ed Harris.
- In the scene where Jackie introduces his girlfriend to Terry, music by the band U2 can be heard playing in the background. Director Phil Joanou previously directed their live concert film U2: Rattle and Hum (1988) and later their music video for the single "One."
- Joe Viterelli, who plays the character "Borelli," made his film debut in State of Grace.
- The movie cast includes two Oscar winners: Sean Penn and Gary Oldman, and three Oscar nominees: Ed Harris, Burgess Meredith, and John C. Reilly.
