Storyline

"Toy Soldiers" is a 1991 action thriller film directed by Daniel Petrie Jr. The movie takes place at the prestigious Regis High School, where a group of rebellious students find themselves in an unexpected and dangerous situation. When the son of a Colombian drug lord, Luis Cali (played by Andrew Divoff), is captured and held as a hostage by the U.S. government, his father retaliates by taking over Regis High School. He sends a group of heavily armed mercenaries to infiltrate the school and hold the students and faculty hostage. Among the students trapped inside the school are Billy Tepper (played by Sean Astin) and his friends. Faced with an imminent threat, they refuse to become victims and decide to fight back. The scene in which Billy eats a banana and throws the peel in the trash was completely improvised by Sean Astin. Prior to filming, Astin requested a prop guy for a banana and decided to incorporate it into the scene. His roll of the eyes when asked to pick up the peel was also an impromptu addition. Dean Parker's response, "Pick up that banana," was a genuine reaction. Apart from Louis Gossett, Jr., the reactions from the other actors were mostly authentic, adding to the spontaneity of the moment. Interestingly, another movie, "Major Payne" (1995), was also filmed at The Miller School of Albemarle, the same location used for "Toy Soldiers." The school served as a backdrop for both films, showcasing its versatility as a filming location. Actor Shawn Phelan, who portrayed Derek in the movie, earned the nickname "Yogurt" during the filming process. The nickname originated when Phelan accidentally spilled a carton of yogurt on himself while riding in a van with his fellow young actors on the way to the set. Finding the situation humorous, his cast-mates started calling him Yogurt, and the nickname stuck throughout the shoot. Eventually, it was even incorporated into the film as Derek's nickname. Sean Astin and Keith Coogan, who appeared in the movie, have familial connections to iconic actors from "The Addams Family" (1964). Astin is the stepson of John Astin, known for his role as Gomez Addams, while Coogan is the grandson of Jackie Coogan, who portrayed Uncle Fester.
