Storyline

"The Invisible Man Returns" is a 1940 science fiction horror film and a sequel to the classic 1933 film "The Invisible Man." The movie was directed by Joe May and is notable for its special effects and the return of the concept of invisibility. In this film, the story follows Geoffrey Radcliffe (played by Vincent Price), who is wrongly accused of murder and sentenced to death. Radcliffe's friend, Dr. Frank Griffin (brother of the original Invisible Man, Dr. Jack Griffin), develops an invisibility serum to help prove Radcliffe's innocence. With the assistance of the invisibility serum, Radcliffe escapes from prison and embarks on a quest to uncover the true murderer. However, as Radcliffe becomes invisible, he finds himself in a precarious situation, as the serum also has the side effect of causing madness in those who use it. "The Invisible Man Returns" is characterized by its exploration of the consequences of invisibility and the ethical dilemmas that arise from its use. As Radcliffe tries to clear his name, he must contend with the dark side of invisibility, including the potential for becoming a threat to society. The film is known for its special effects, which were advanced for the time, and its portrayal of the invisible man through techniques such as wires and a bandaged appearance. Vincent Price's performance is also a highlight, as he was a key figure in the horror genre and brought depth to the character of Geoffrey Radcliffe. While "The Invisible Man Returns" may not be as iconic as the original 1933 film, it is appreciated as a classic of the science fiction and horror genres and a noteworthy entry in the Universal Monsters film series. It offers a different perspective on invisibility and the potential consequences of wielding such power.

Trivia

Communication problems during the shooting of the film occurred because the German director spoke no English. Vincent Price, who was fluent in German, had to translate all instructions to the other cast members. The film's impressive visual effects, especially the scenes depicting Vincent Price transitioning from invisible to visible, earned it an Academy Award nomination. Despite going over budget, the film was one of the more profitable Universal Horror films, grossing nearly four times its $230,000 cost. "The Invisible Man Returns" was one of Vincent Price's early featured roles, despite playing the title character. He was billed second after Cedric Hardwicke. The shooting of the film took place from October to December 1939, and it was released on January 15, 1940. Vincent Price worked on this film shortly after James Whale's "Green Hell" (1940), which was released one day before, on January 14. The film was part of the original "Shock Theater" package of 52 Universal titles released to television in 1957, followed by "Son of Shock," which added 20 more features a year later. The initial wrapping of Radcliffe's face in the film bears a resemblance to the facial structure of the Creature from the Black Lagoon, particularly in the lips and eyes. A pre-production news item mentioned that Rowland V. Lee was initially set to produce and direct the film, with W. P. Lipscomb scripting. However, their actual involvement in the final film is unconfirmed. "The Invisible Man Returns" received a Swedish visa on March 18, 1940.
